Maj.-Gen Dany Fortin announced during a COVID-19 technical briefing Wednesday that Canada is preparing a “dry run” for the delivery of the Moderna vaccine, which officials say will be key for reaching remote Indigenous communities.
Fortin was joined by deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo, Dr. Tom Wong, chief medical health officer at Indigenous Services, and Dr. Evan Adams, deputy chief medical officer at Indigenous Services to make the announcement.
Speaking to reporters, Fortin said the Moderna vaccines will be delivered to locations identified by the provinces and territories so they can be rolled out quickly, pending approval from Health Canada.
Adams said it was “imperative that First Nations, Inuit and Metis be partners with provinces and territories in the co-planning for culturally safe and equitable vaccine access in both rural and urban areas.”
The first doses of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine were administered Monday in Quebec and Ontario, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday the country had secured 168,000 of Moderna’s vaccines that are expected to arrive before the end of December, pending approval from Health Canada.
