Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced Thursday that the province would be launching walk-in AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine appointments at 26 pharmacies in Calgary and Edmonton, and two walk-in clinics in the same cities on Saturday.

According to Hinshaw, "while these walk-in clinics are limited to Calgary and Edmonton you don't need to live there to get your dose."

Anyone in the 55 to 64 age range will be eligible for shots at the locations.

Hinshaw also announced that following the decision to move all Calgary junior and high school students to at-home learning, all extracurricular youth sports, recreational and performance activities in the city will have to take place outdoors or be paused for two weeks starting on Monday.

The province recorded 1,646 new cases of COVID-19 in Alberta on Thursday and 1,020 variants of concern were identified.

There are 416 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19 and 86 people in intensive care.

Five additional COVID-19-related deaths were recorded in Alberta.
