World Health Organization director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke Wednesday about the agency's COVID-19 preparedness and response plan for 2022, saying that the most-likely scenario it laid out was that while the disease would continue to evolve, severity would decline as immunity globally rises.

However, he again called for more equitable access to vaccine, saying it was the most powerful tool available for saving lives.

The briefing comes after the WHO released a report indicating the number of deaths from COVID-19 surged by more than 40 per cent last week, likely due to changes in how they were reported across the Americas and by newly adjusted figures from India.

About 10 million new infections and more than 45,000 deaths were reported worldwide over the past week, following a 23 per cent drop in fatalities the week before.

WHO has repeatedly said that case counts were likely a vast underestimate of the coronavirus' prevalence.
