Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Thursday that Canada has added up to 30 new RCMP members and civil servants in order to implement sanctions against Iran, including its decision to ban half the membership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Mendicino said work was underway to stand up a hotline to report those linked to the IRGC.
Mendicino made the comments alongside Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Youth in Canada Marci Ien, Attorney General and Justice Minister David Lametti and Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.
Fraser added that as a result of the ban on IRGC members, family members of Iranian regime members who are already in Canada could have their status revoked and be removed from Canada.
“This is not about headscarves,” Ien said. “This is about respecting a woman’s right to self-determine her own path.”
Lametti defended the government’s decision not to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity, saying that the provision in the Criminal Code is a ““blunt instrument.” He said a terrorist listing would not provide the necessary precision to “target the bad actors without catching innocent people as well.”
