Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw outlined on Wednesday what groups will be vaccinated against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the vaccine rollout, with those at highest-risk of severe outcomes and their caregivers being prioritized in the first phase.

She said Phase 2 of the vaccination program will likely come in April.

The province officially started its rollout of its vaccination program on Tuesday. A respiratory therapist at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and an ICU nurse at the Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre were the first people in the province to get the Pfizer vaccine.

On Wednesday, the province confirmed 1,270 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. There are 749 people in hospital, including 139 people in ICU. Hinshaw reported 16 new deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday.
