Rep. Jaime Raskin called for an assault weapons ban and a bipartisan effort to end political violence during his opening remarks at a House Oversight hearing on the Secret Service and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

A gunman armed with an AR-15 shot and wounded Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. Two others were wounded and a third man killed at the rally.'

Raskin called the AR-15 a “weapon of war” and said they had been used for multiple mass shootings in addition to the attack at the Trump rally.
"A weapon that can be used to commit a mass shooting at an event under the full protection of the Secret Service together with dozens of state and local police is obviously an intolerable threat to the rest of us who do not receive such protection," Raskin said.

Secret Service Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House panel Monday to answer questions about the July 13 attempted assassination of Trump.
