Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., questioned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in a House Oversight hearing Monday on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Mfume recalled examples of political violence spanning decades, from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to the attack on Paul Pelosi, husband to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Mfume then asked Cheatle why the rooftop where the shooter set up to launch his attack "was left naked to begin with."
"I can't speak to the specifics of this event site," Cheatle said, saying there are a number of factors that go into creating a plan, and that the team had an "overwatch" covering that area.
