For the first time since taking office, President Joe Biden delivered remarks to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. During the speech, Biden introduced the American Families Plan, to address what he called “four of the biggest challenges facing American families today” —education, child care, paid leave and poverty. The plan expands access to public education and child care, provides up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave and expands a tax credit for children. "This will help more than 65 million children and help cut child poverty in half this year," Biden said.
Normally the full House and Senate and most of the president's Cabinet would be in attendance, but because of COVID-19 restrictions, attendance was limited to roughly 200 people.
