Pressed by Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre at question period in the House of Commons on Thursday, to provide a date that his government will launch a new foreign agents registry, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined to provide specifics. Poilievre said the government has been aware of examples of such a registry, like the one in Australia, and could have already held consultations.

Earlier this week, Trudeau committed to new steps his government will take to combat foreign interference, including additional independent investigations and further steps toward establishing a foreign agents registry.

Poilievre also asked Trudeau to commit to returning any alleged funds linked to the Chinese government. This comes after Global News reported on a “special report” from the Privy Council Office in January 2022 about a “large clandestine transfer of funds earmarked for the federal election from the PRC Consulate in Toronto.”
