Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded on Monday to the decision by Liberal MP Chandra Arya to call on the Canadian government to rethink its foreign agents registry to combat interference by other countries, saying he still backed the registry, but Ottawa would need to be "very careful" on how it rolls it out.

He cited past incidents, such as the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, stressing they need to ensure it doesn't "vulnerabilize or target communities that are already primarily ... the first targets of foreign interference."

Asked if he could commit to having the registry in place before the next federal election, Trudeau reiterated they needed to "take on a range of tools" in terms of protecting Canadians from foreign interference, but do so in a way they do not do things that make diaspora Canadians vulnerable.
