Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked Capital Pride in Ottawa, Ont., on Sunday by announcing the launch of a $100 million plan to combat discrimination and increase inclusion for 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians.
Trudeau made the announcement alongside Women and Gender Equality and Youth Minister Marci Ien. Treasury Board President Mona Fortier, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Parliamentary Secretary Marie-France Lalonde, Women and Gender Equality Parliamentary Secretary Jenna Sudds and Ottawa Centre MP Yasir Naqvi were also in attendance.
“This is a whole of government plan that will guide our ongoing work to fight discrimination, to break down barriers, to advance rights and to build a future where everyone in Canada is truly free to be who they are and to love who they love,” Trudeau said about the plan.
Ien said the government will spend the majority of the $100 million, or $75 million, on funding for community organizations. She said $40 million would be spent on “new capacity building support,” $35 million on project-focused support and $8 million would go toward data collection.
Another $5.6 million will be spent on an awareness campaign on battling discrimination and $11.7 will go toward the 2SLGBTQ+ Secretariat.
