Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced and outlined a $196.1-billion health funding deal that he had offered the country's premiers earlier on Tuesday, which would include $46.2 billion in new funding.

Trudeau said among the financial package is a proposed increase to the Canada Health Transfer, which would see an immediate, unconditional $2 billion top-up to the provinces to address immediate pressures in the health-care system.

He also said that the bilateral agreements would be "tailored" and "flexible" to the needs of each province and territory, but he said each would need to provide transparent information "so that your health-care system is accountable."

"Let's get this done, let's give Canadians expect and that they deserve," Trudeau said.

He added he expects in the "coming weeks, not months" bilateral deals with the provinces and territories would be struck.
