Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told media on Thursday that the onus on properly investing federal funding for health care is on the provinces themselves.

He likened this to Canada's childcare deals made with each province and territory.

"We're looking for ambitious targets that are reasonable for [provinces] that they can hit, that they can be accountable to, that will improve access to primary care in a significant way," he said.

This comes after Trudeau said his government has signed health-care agreements in principle with all four Atlantic provinces and Ontario.

The prime minister and the provincial and territorial premiers met on Feb. 7 to discuss their individual health-care system priorities. The federal government will be giving a total of $46.2 billion in new money for health care over the next decade.
