Defending his government against accusations of what Conservatives described as “inflationary spending” during question period in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Conservatives “cold-hearted” for not supporting his government’s new dental benefit for children or rental supports for low-income Canadians.

“Only cold-hearted Conservatives would imagine and describe sending kids who otherwise can’t afford to go to the dentist as ‘pouring fuel on inflationary fires.’ Only Conservative politicians would consider that giving targeted support for low-income Canadians to pay would be pouring inflationary fuel on the fire,” he said.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre blasted Trudeau for policies that he said are sending more Canadians to the foodbank every month, and resulting in record credit card debt.

Trudeau also sparred with Poilievre on the Conservative leader’s failure to condemn Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s use of the notwithstanding clause to impose a contract on educational workers and “stand up for the fundamental rights and freedoms of Canadians.”

“Not a whisper from this so-called freedom fighter,” he said.

The Ontario legislature is actively debating Bill 28, which would impose a four-year contract on 55,000 education support workers, prohibits a strike during the life of the contract and uses the notwithstanding clause to prevent the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) from using the charter to challenge the legislation in court.
