Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre and MP Raquel Dancho both criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government's gun control bill in the final question period of 2022 on Wednesday, accusing him of "going after hunters" as the Liberals continue to defend Bill C-21.

A Liberal amendment to Bill C-21 would set out a regulatory ban on what the government calls "assault-style weapons" by putting an evergreen definition for such firearms into law. However, it has faced criticisms from Conservatives, firearms groups, and even NHL hockey star Carey Price, that it could lead to hunters losing their right to own a firearm.

Poilievre said Trudeau was banning firearms that are "not even semi-automatic."

"These are firearms that need to be re-chambered every single time," he said. "They're deliberately created for hunting and sustenance."

Trudeau defended the bill Wednesday, saying the government is consulting with partners "to make sure we're not capturing weapons we shouldn't be," including hunters, fishers, Indigenous groups, as well as parliamentarians.
