Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday the MAGA ("Make America Great Again") movement in the U.S. was to blame for the apparent dwindling support among Canadian Conservatives for Ukraine, after the Tories rejected a free trade deal over what they claimed to be language around carbon pricing.

Trudeau called this reasoning from the Conservatives “absurd.”

“The real story is the rise of a right-wing American MAGA-influenced thinking that has made Canadian conservatives, who used to among the strongest defenders of Ukraine – I’ll admit it – turn their backs on something Ukraine needs in its hour of need,” he said.

Trudeau’s comments come after Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre defended his party’s decision to reject the trade deal, saying it was not free trade they rejected but the insertion of carbon pricing language into the agreement.

“The people of Ukraine… he expects them to rebuild from a war with a devastating and crippling tax on their energy?” he asked.

The Ukraine has had a price on carbon in place for years and Liberals say the language around carbon pricing isn’t binding but is intended to ensure any trade initiatives don’t hinder the parties’ abilities to promote climate change initiatives.
