The Manitoba Nurses’ Union is raising concerns about a dire situation created by staffing shortages at hospitals across the province. It says sexual assault victims are being turned away because there are not enough nurses to examine them.
The union says hospitals are telling victims to preserve forensic evidence as best they can and return when staffing improves.
“Imagine being told not to shower, not to change your child’s diaper or to wipe after going to the washroom in an effort to preserve evidence that may affect the outcome of a court case. This is outrageous,” said Darlene Jackson, the unions’ president.
As Marney Blunt reports, critics say the staffing shortages are dissuading victims from coming forward.
