Nearly a year after Putin launched his attack on Ukraine, NATO says Russia’s much-feared spring offensive is already underway. Both sides are suffering painful losses and running through vast stocks of ammunition as they wage a fierce battle for small gains in the east of the country. In strategically important Bachmut, for example, months of unrelenting assault by the private mercenary group Wagner have taken a bloody toll on both sides and destroyed the city.
