Donald Trump sounds like an extortionist. If allies want the protection of the USA, they have to pay. It is a blunt warning by the Republican presidential candidate, and a taste of what’s to come should he return to the presidency. Russia would be able to do whatever it wants with delinquent NATO members; a possibility that appalls and horrifies NATO partner states. Many EU countries see Trump's statements as a wake-up call to become militarily self-sufficient. Ukraine is also planning to challenge Russia with new military leadership and a new strategy.
