Turkey is a longstanding member of NATO with the alliance’s second largest army…but its President is becoming an increasingly difficult partner -- defaming Israel as fascist, praising Hamas as liberators. That posed a diplomatic challenge for Germany’s chancellor as he prepared to receive the Turkish leader. Under Erdogan’s rule, Turkey has flexed its muscles near and far, seeking to project power from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean, courting both Russia and China. The president’s autocratic policies at home and his abrasive actions abroad are alienating partners, who nonetheless depend on him. Is Turkey on a collision course with NATO?
