NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday that the feared new major Russian offensive in Ukraine, almost one year after Moscow launched the war, has already started.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of the military alliance, Stoltenberg said there were "no sign" Russian President Vladimir Putin was preparing for peace.

He called on NATO members to continue providing “urgent” military support to Kyiv.

This comes as the Russian Defence Ministry said on Monday it had taken Krasna Hora — a settlement seven kilometres from Bakhmut, Ukraine, the front lines of fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops.

A day earlier, on Sunday, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the co-founder of Russia's Wagner Group, said his mercenary forces had taken the village and promised to capture Bakhmut.

Bakhmut, in the Donetsk region, is a major objective for Putin and months of Russian shelling have already left much of it in ruins.
