NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday, ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine defence contact group at Ramstein air base in Germany, that members agree Ukraine will eventually join the military alliance.

Stoltenberg’s comments come after a Thursday visit to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said it was time NATO offer his country membership.

He said the “main focus” now is to ensure Ukraine prevails as it continues to fend off attacks from Russia as Putin’s full-scale invasion continues.

Stoltenberg told reporters that once the war ends, Kyiv must have “the deterrence to prevent new attacks.”

“Because you must remember that the war didn’t start in February of last year. The war started in 2014 when Russia illegally annexed Crimea and when Russia for the first time moved into the Eastern Donbas,” he said.
