During question period in the House of Commons on Monday, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould recommended that Canadians not to submit applications for passports unless it was urgent, as they legally could not be processed during the strike. Saying that she believes in “telling the truth,” Gould clarified that more information about urgent or humanitarian situations was available online.

Conservative MP Michelle Ferreri retaliated by demanding to know when the federal government would “fix what they broke” and how much the costs would be. “That chaos out on the streets… is on their backs,” Ferrari said.

“This is the largest public sector union strike in 40 years. Revenue Canada workers are off the job and vital services have been halted. The tax filing deadline is this week and Canadians can’t even get their phone calls answered. What is the government going to do to ensure continuity of service so Canadians can get their most basic questions answered?” Conservative MP Adam Chambers demanded.

One of Canada’s largest labour disruptions entered its sixth day as the union represents thousands of striking public-service workers. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) says more than 100,000 of its staff remain on strike, some of whom are expected to move their picket lines Monday to strategic locations more likely to have an impact on the federal government.
