Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Wednesday called for a “smooth and fast ratification of our membership” after her country was joined by Sweden in submitting applications to NATO for membership.
The two Nordic countries formally applied to join the military alliance on Wednesday, a decision spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called the move a “historic step” and said the alliance was committed to “work through all issues and reach a rapid conclusion.”
Ratification of all 30 allied parliaments could take up to a year, diplomats say.
