Security concerns raised by Turkey in its opposition to Finnish and Swedish NATO membership applications are legitimate, the Western military alliance's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Finland on Sunday.

Stoltenberg, visiting Finland's President Sauli Niinistö, said it was important to note that no other NATO ally has suffered more terrorist attacks than Turkey and therefore its concerns needed to be taken seriously.

Speaking at a news conference alongside Niinistö during an annual meeting on Nordic security, Stoltenberg also welcomed Finland and Sweden's willingness to hold discussions with Turkey.

"It is the right decision for Finland and Sweden to apply for membership that will strengthen their security; it will strengthen NATO and it will strengthen security and stability throughout the Euro-Atlantic area," Stoltenberg said.

Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO last month in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine but face opposition from Turkey, which accuses them of supporting and harbouring Kurdish militants and other groups it deems terrorists.
