NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg once again urged Turkey to accept Sweden and Finland into the military alliance, telling Turkey’s foreign minister on Thursday “it’s time to welcome Sweden and Finland as full members.”

Stoltenberg told Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu Thursday during a joint press conference that the Nordic countries have “delivered” on the trilateral memorandum signed in June that led Turkey to lift its veto, paving the way for Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance.

He said the countries had become “strong partners in our joint fight against terrorism” and that they were both “clearly committed to long-term engagement with Turkey” to address its security concerns.

The NATO chief also praised Turkey for its part in “negotiating safe passage” for Ukrainian grain out of Black Sea ports. He added, however, that increased prices and problems in the global food market would continue until Russia’s war in Ukraine has ended.
