Finland, Sweden must keep promises to Turkey to ratify NATO deal, Erdogan says

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that Finland and Sweden would need to keep the promises they made to Turkey in a deal to lift its veto on the two Nordic countries joining NATO, saying ratification would otherwise not be sent to the Turkish parliament.

He said the two countries must complete legislative changes regarding terrorists, and added Sweden had promised to extradite 73 individuals he described as terrorists. However, the memorandum of understanding between Turkey, Sweden and Finland had not listed any explicit pledges for extradition, only that the countries would address the former's requests.

Earlier on Thursday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that Finland and Sweden would sign the NATO accession protocol on July 5 to formally join the alliance. Turkey had previously said it would veto the two countries joining the alliance over various concerns, including that Sweden had been harbouring what it said were militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
