As the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) strike drags on, it's plunging hundreds of thousands of immigration applications into uncertainty.

Tens of thousands of federal public workers have walked off the job, including civil servants who handle immigration files. Federal public workers have stopped processing all new applications.

At any given time, around a million applications are making their way through Canada's immigration system. With many of them on pause due to the strike, immigration lawyers warn there could be a profoundly negative effect on families, students and the economy.

And the longer that takes, the wider the impact — especially as the Canadian government relies heavily on immigration to deal with a severe labour shortage. Touria Izri has more.
