Canada's federal immigration minister Sean Fraser said on Wednesday that over the past two weeks, the country has received more than 112,000 applications for the expedited Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel process.

In addition, the government will be expanding settlement support for these refugees.

Fraser's news conference comes after he attended a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

When asked how Canada will juggle the influx of Ukrainian refugees as it grapples with the Afghanistan refugee crisis, the minister replied the government will honour those commitments on the basis of "a moral obligation."

"There's never been more demand on our immigration system in Canada," said Fraser. "Do we have the capacity to make good on these commitments? I don't think we have the capacity not to."

Many Ukrainians who’ve applied to come to Canada are doing so under a special visitor visa program that would allow them to work and study for three years while they decide whether to return home.
