Protests gathered in Houston as the National Rifle Association (NRA) forged ahead with its annual convention days after a mass shooting killed 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

The protesters held signs and red splattered clothing, shouting "NRA go away," as hundreds of members of the nation's biggest gun lobby arrived at the convention hall.

Former President Donald Trump and other leading Republicans are scheduled to address the three-day firearms marketing and advocacy event, which has drawn in protesters fed up with gun violence.

Some scheduled speakers and performers have backed out, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and “American Pie” singer Don McLean, who said “it would be disrespectful” to go ahead with his act in the aftermath of the country’s latest mass shooting.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is instead expected to hold a news conference at Uvalde High School at the same time he was scheduled to speak in Houston, though it is reported that he will be sending a pre-recorded video to the summit in place of his in-person speech.
