Officials from the Uvalde, Texas school district held a press conference on Thursday, following the tragic mass shooting at an elementary school in the area that left 19 students dead, as well as two faculty members.
Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Hal Harrell told media that the district is working with an external security firm to address potential future security concerns.
"We have, in our security walks, worked with an outside agency to put that information together as a working list," he said, regarding findings from observations.
Harrell added that prior to the mass shooting, the school district has also worked with an architecture firm for the physical buildings themselves, though the focus wasn't necessarily on safety and security.
It was also announced that classes would not be returning to Robb Elementary School, the site of the tragedy, with the future of the site itself still under review.
This press conference came after the school district police chief, Pete Arredondodid, was criticized for waiting too long before law enforcement confronted and killed the gunman during the mass shooting. Also, Arredondodid did not appear at a city council meeting in Uvalde on Tuesday, despite being newly elected to the panel.
