White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing on Thursday that “common-sense gun control” and a “whole of government” approach are needed to address gun violence across the nation, after at least 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday.

When asked whether the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) plans to go ahead with their conference this weekend is inappropriate, Jean-Pierre replied saying that “what is inappropriate is that the leadership of the NRA has proven time and time again that they are contributing to the problem of gun violence. Not trying to solve it.”

“These were elementary school kids,” Jean-Pierre said. “They should be losing their first teeth, not losing their lives.”

Jean-Pierre also announced that U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will travel to Uvalde on Sunday to grieve with the community and show their support.

It had been one week since Biden addressed another mass shooting when he travelled to Buffalo to meet with the families of 10 people killed at a grocery store there during a racially-motivated attack.
