A historic apology was delivered on Monday to victims of sexual misconduct in the Canadian military.

The apology came in three parts: Defence Minister Anita Anand apologized on behalf of the federal government, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre apologized on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces and Deputy Minister of National Defence Jody Thomas on behalf of the Department of National Defence.

It forms a key part of the federal government's $900-million settlement agreement in relation to several overlapping class-action lawsuits.

Gen. Eyre acknowledged that the military has not done the “deep” work needed to address the underlying issues that cause sexual misconduct, and that “the harm you suffered happened on our collective watch — on my watch.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said on Monday morning the apology would acknowledge the “terrible mistakes of the past.”
