Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially apologized on Saturday on behalf of the government of Canafa to descendants of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada’s only all-Black unit to serve in the First World War.

“We owe these brave Black men so much,” he said.

Trudeau joined other officials, including Defence Minister Anita Anand, in apologizing for the overt racism members of the battalion faced when enlisting, as well as the failure in the decades since by Canada to properly recognize their sacrifice.

The Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed forces have said the systemic racism endured by the men of the No. 2 Construction Battalion qualifies as hateful conduct.
