Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday that Canada has permanently banned half the membership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from ever entering Canada, as protests sweep the nation following the death of Mahsa Amini.

The 22-year-old died after being taken into custody by Iran’s morality police for reportedly wearing her hijab too loosely.

Trudeau said that Canada would list the Iranian regime, including the IRGC leadership under the “most powerful provision” of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which would ensure that more than 10,000 officers and senior members of the IRGC are permanently barred from entry.

“This is a measure that has only been used in the most serious circumstances against regimes conducting war crimes or genocides,” he said.

Trudeau said the government would also “massively expand” targeted sanctions and announced $76 million to strengthen Canada’s capacity to implement those sanctions.
