The girlfriend of Daunte Wright, Alayna Albrecht-Payton, who was in the car with him when he was fatally shot by Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter, delivered an emotional testimony on Thursday as she tearfully recalled the man's final moments, saying "he was just gasping" for air.
Prosecutors say the officer flouted years of training when she had mistakenly used her pistol instead of her Taser during a traffic stop when he had escaped from officers' hold. The car the couple were in drove off for several blocks before swerving into another lane and crashing into another car. Albrecht-Payton testified she did not remember Wright's hands on the wheel as the car was moving after he had been shot. She also said she tried to help him, saying no one else was doing so.
Asked about a call with Wright's mother that happened shortly after the shooting while still in the car, Albrecht-Payton also apologized to Katie Bryant -- also known as Katie Wright -- from the stand for turning the video call to face her son in the driver's seat, adding she regrets having done so.
"No mom should have to see their son get hurt on the phone, on a video call," she said tearfully.
