Brooklyn Center, Minn. police chief Tim Gannon said on Monday that the officer-involved shooting of Daunte Wright, a Black man who died following a traffic stop Sunday, was due to an "accidental discharge." Gannon said based on audio and video in body-camera footage, he believed the officer had been reaching for her Taser but instead pulled her gun and shot Wright with a single bullet. He said the officer has been placed on administrative leave.

The incident occurred when police stopped the man in a vehicle due to a traffic violation and they said it was discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant. Police said when they tried to arrest him, he re-entered the vehicle. They said one officer shot the man who then drove away. He then drove several blocks before striking another vehicle and dying at the scene.

Body camera footage shown during the briefing Monday shows the encounter and at one point one officer can be heard yelling "Taser! Taser! Taser!" and the officer can be heard shouting an expletive before telling officers she had shot the man as he drove away.

Protests erupted over Wright's death in the community overnight Sunday, with police at one point firing tear gas and rubber bullets to clear the crowd. Smoke also billowed outside the police station Sunday night after protesters also gathered outside the building. Another group of protesters also broke into about 20 businesses, officials said in a late night press conference.

Gannon said that he had asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate the shooting and asked for calm in the community while the investigation is completed.
