The jury in the trial of Kim Potter, the former Minnesota police officer accused in the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, heard the first testimonies this week including Wright's mother, girlfriend, and two of the officers who were on the scene of the traffic stop that led to the Black man's death.
Lawyers for Potter are arguing that the former officer made a mistake when she pulled out her pistol instead of her Taser, and are also arguing that she would have been justified in shooting him due to Wright's actions at the time. Bodycam video shows at one point, Wright gets back in his car after having been told he was under arrest due to a warrant for a gross misdemeanour weapons possession charge. The warrant was discovered during a traffic stop due to expired licence plate tags and a air freshener hanging in the window -- which is illegal in Minnesota.
Prosecutors meanwhile argued Potter was a veteran who had violated her training when she reached for her service pistol instead of her sidearm, and should've known the difference. The former officer faces charges of first and second-degree manslaughter. Neither charge requires proof that she intended to kill. Sean Previl takes a look at how the week unfolded.
