In tonight's top story: Israel says it aims to dismember Hamas and its military capability — revenge for those horrific attacks on southern Israel. It's insisting, however, civilians are not the enemy. Crystal Goomansingh has the latest on the humanitarian crisis growing in Gaza.
The horror surrounding what Hamas militants did in Southern Israel during its surprise attack is truly hard to believe. But now, with its ground invasion of Gaza imminent, Israel has been told to abide by the rules of war. However, the counter-offensive is stoking fears for more than one hundred hostages held captive by Hamas. As Jeff Semple reports, they're believed to be hidden in buildings and the network of vein-like tunnels that run under the Palestinian enclave.
The family of Israeli-Canadian Shir Georgy, who went missing when Hamas militants ambushed a music festival in southern Israel, said the 22 year old has died. They received word that her body had been identified, making her the fourth Canadian killed in the Hamas attack. Caryn Lieberman spoke with Georgy's cousin, who is remembering the young woman as someone who loved life and was always smiling.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told Middle Eastern leaders that there can be no "business as usual" with Hamas, as his diplomatic tour ramps up. As Israel's closest ally, the Americans are working to quell any further regional escalations in the conflict. But as Joel Senick reports, Blinken is also urging for the protection of civilians in Gaza.
Plus, in the months before the Hamas attack on Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was fighting to save his job. Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in multiple protests, angry about Netanyahu's judicial reform. As Eric Sorensen reports, that has now been put on hold as the country is rallying behind the prime minister and his government, though the huge security and intelligence failure is expected to come back to haunt him.
