In tonight’s top story: Internet and phone services collapsed in the Gaza Strip on Friday following intensified Israeli bombardment — leaving its 2.3 million residents cut off from the outside world and each other.

In a follow-up briefing, an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson said residents of Gaza City should seek imminent safety as attacks from Israel will persist. Global correspondent Daniele Hamamdjian has the latest.

Global’s Redmond Shannon, however, looks at the UN’s viewpoint and how it is calling upon Israel and Hamas militants to put an immediate end to ongoing attacks against one another to allow aid transports to drop off rations for citizens of Gaza.

Over in Canada, Tamer Jarada and his wife were both warned by their parents — still living in Gaza — that they may not live through the airstrikes. Each time the Calgary man spoke with his dad, he knew it could be for the final time. But never did he believe he would lose both parents or 15 other members of his family. Heather Yourex-West reports on this tragedy.

And, despite implementing a carbon tax to incentivize “people and businesses to pollute less,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday that his government would pause applying carbon pricing to home heating oil deliveries for three years in Atlantic Canada.

The announcement came amid pressures for Trudeau to axe the carbon tax as Canadians struggle to pay their bills and afford food. Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, however, suggests the decision was made as Trudeau sits in “panic mode” as a federal election looms.
