Israel warns of "expanding" ground operations in Gaza as connection to region is lost

Internet and phone services collapsed in the Gaza Strip on Friday following intensified Israeli bombardment — leaving its 2.3 million residents cut off from the outside world and each other.

In a follow-up briefing, an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson said residents of Gaza City should seek imminent safety as attacks from Israel will persist.

The announcement suggests the IDF is one step closer to a full ground invasion of Gaza, where it has vowed to crush the ruling Hamas militant group after its horrific and unprecedented attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7.
