In tonight's top story: Israel's military is resuming combat operations in Gaza after the end of its temporary truce with Hamas. The week-long ceasefire saw Hamas release 110 hostages, and Israel freeing 240 Palestinian prisoners. Crystal Goomansingh reports on the new bloodshed and bombardments.

And with the violence back on, questions are once again swirling about Israel's goal of eliminating Hamas and who may take over if that goal is accomplished. The renewed fighting leaves the political future of the Palestinian people more uncertain than ever in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Daniele Hamamdjian visited the West Bank and spoke with some people about why they support Hamas.

Canada's unemployment rate rose slightly in November, even as the economy added just under 25,000 jobs. Manufacturing and construction saw gains, while the trade, finance, insurance and real estate sectors lost jobs. As Nivrita Ganguly reports, many small businesses are bearing the brunt of labour shortages.

A United Nations report criticized Canada last month, calling it the country with the widest gap between its promises and actual climate action. Abigail Bimman looks at what new pledges the country is making at the COP28 Summit and what else to expect.

Also, indicted Republican George Santos' brief career in the U.S. House of Representatives came to an end on Friday when fellow lawmakers voted to expel him over criminal corruption charges and accusations of misspending campaign money. As Jackson Proskow reports, the House voted 311-114 to immediately remove the controversial freshman lawmaker, above the two-thirds majority required to oust one of its own.

Plus, winning $100,000 in the lottery isn't exactly a windfall in this economy. But, for one Nova Scotia couple, it's been enough to set their minds at ease after being renovicted last year. As Heidi Petracek explains, that experience also inspired them to pay something forward.
