Israel had warned that it would be ready to resume fighting if a deal could not be reached with Hamas by 7 a.m. local time on Friday. That deadline came and went, and fighting has since resumed.

The U.S. has made it clear to Israel that it has to have protections in place for civilians and that the massive loss of life seen in northern Gaza cannot be repeated in the south.

Meanwhile, Hamas has called for a “Day of Rage” in the West Bank.
