Tributes took place Tuesday in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to commemorate the victims of the École Polytechnique shooting on the 33rd anniversary of the tragedy. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended.

On Dec. 6, 1989, a man motivated by a hatred of women shot and killed 14 female students and injured 13 other people at the Montreal engineering school.

At the end of the day — at 5:10 p.m., the time the first shots were fired — 14 beams will illuminate the sky above Mount Royal in memory of the women who lost their lives.

The anniversary of the École Polytechnique shooting is also in the public spotlight after Montreal Canadiens‘ goalie Carey Price spoke out on the weekend in an Instagram post against a proposed gun control bill put forward by the Trudeau Liberals.

In the post published Saturday, Price wrote in part: “I love my family, I love my country and I care for my neighbour. I am not a criminal or a threat to society. What Justin Trudeau is trying to do is unjust. I support the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights to keep my hunting tools.”
