A ceremony of remembrance was held in Orlando, Florida on Saturday as the city marked five years since the tragic shooting at Pulse Nightclub that left 49 people dead.

In the early morning hours of June 12, 2016, a gunman entered the gay nightclub and opened fire, killing dozens and wounding 53.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer spoke during the ceremony, calling the anniversary a “day to honour the 49 angels that were taken” and “celebrate the resilience” of survivors, their families, and first responders and medical professionals.

Ceremonies have been held yearly to mark the anniversary, with citywide events taking place. This year, the events began with more than 2,000 runners hitting the pavement for the fifth annual Rainbow Run.

Just days before the anniversary, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to officially designate the Pulse Nightclub site as a nationally recognized memorial.
