U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday paused for a moment of silence on the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, commemorating the deaths of hundreds of Black people who were killed by a white mob a century ago.

Biden called out efforts to characterize the events in Tulsa as a riot, saying “My fellow Americans, this was not a riot. It was a massacre.”

He is the first sitting president to participate in remembrances of the destruction of what was known as “Black Wall Street,” In 1921 – on May 31 and June 1 – when a white mob, including some people hastily deputized by authorities, looted and burned Tulsa's predominantly-Black Greenwood district.

In his speech marking the anniversary of the tragic event, Biden highlighted efforts his government is spearheading to “combat racial discrimination” in housing and small business ownership, making it possible for more Black Americans to buy homes and increasing government’s spending on Black-owned businesses.
