A group of leading Canadian health organizations urged Canada's minister of health and the associate minister of health to take immediate action regarding the sale and marketing of flavoured nicotine products during a news conference on Tuesday.

"On July 18, Health Canada gave approval to a sister company of Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. for the sale of nicotine pouches supposedly as a smoking cessation product. Approval was given under the natural health product regulations and Imperial Tobacco started to sell these products in October. Nicotine pouches do not contain tobacco, but they do contain nicotine," says Rob Cunningham, a Sr. Policy Analyst for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Physicians for Smoke-Free Canada Executive Director Cynthia Callard says "We're not calling for a ban on these products – what we're calling for is a suspension of their sale until measures can be put in place to protect children in the nicotine market."

Nearly half of Canadian young adults aged 20 to 24 and about one-third of youth 15-19 say they have tried vaping at least once in their lives, according to numbers released by Statistics Canada in September in their Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey (CTNS).
