The Liberal government’s new dental care benefit for children is open for applications, which will help qualifying families get help for their children’s dental costs.

“What we are announcing today is that parents across the country are now going to be able to afford to send their kids to the dentist. This is a key and essential part of us being there for people, making sure that everyone has the best chance to succeed,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday during an event in London, Ont. marking the opening of the program.

The benefit is available for children in families that earn less than $90,000 a year and ranges from $260 to $650 per child depending on net income.

The benefit was part of the policies pushed by the federal NDP for the party to support the minority Liberal government on major legislation and confidence votes. Children under 12 are only the first stage of the dental plan announced by the Liberals, with more age groups to be rolled out with the federal government's commitment to a full dental care program for households with income under $90,000 by 2025.
