Seniors Minister Kamal Khera and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said Wednesday that $3 billion set aside from the 2021 budget would be used to help provinces and territories implement new national long-term care standards.

In January, the Health Standards Organization released updated standards for long-term care that say residents should get at least four hours of care every day. The standards, from a panel of experts at the non-profit organization, also say those who work in those residences must be paid more.

Duclos said Wednesday that in many cases the new standards would be “immediately incorporated” in many long-term care homes across the country.

Duclos also said that a long-term care act would be tabled in the coming months.

Additionally, part of the $198.6 billion commitment Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in February to improve health care over the next 10 years would go toward long-term care.
