Canadian officials provided an update on Friday regarding the disastrous wildfires in Northwest Territories, where they announced the Royal Canadian Air Force evacuated 79 long-term care patients from the capital, Yellowknife.
Ministers Harjit Sajjan, Bill Blair, Terry Beech, Pablo Rodriguez, and Parliamentary Secretary Julie Dabrusin addressed the public and took questions from the media, as the entire capital continues to be evacuated, though is now nearly empty.
All 22,000 residents of the capital city were ordered to evacuate Wednesday night as the wildfire crept closer. More than 230 fires across the territory have forced half of the population to leave their homes, according to Blair.
During the press conference, he said the government's goal is to evacuate everyone. However, when asked if there are financial supports for those paying for commercial flights to evacuate, he said it's the territory's responsibility to designate financial support.
Flights started on Thursday afternoon but are limited to those who can’t drive or have health issues, according to the evacuation order. There is only one road out of Yellowknife that leads away from the encroaching fire. And that route south passes through territory already scorched by the flames – and through the burned town of Enterprise, now all but destroyed.
